Information for system partners

An extreme risk protection order (ERPO) is one tool communities can use to help prevent violence, suicide and crisis situations before tragedy occurs. 

While only certain individuals are authorized to petition for an ERPO, many system partners including schools, healthcare providers, mental health professionals, faith leaders and law enforcement can play a critical role in recognizing warning signs, responding to safety concerns and helping connect people to support.

Whether you are identifying concerning behavior, supporting someone in crisis or coordinating with law enforcement, your actions can help reduce immediate risk and protect lives. 

ERPOs are not a substitute for treatment or prevention. They can provide an important temporary safeguard during periods of extreme risk. By understanding the law and working together across systems, we can create safer outcomes for individuals, families and communities.
