Getting your photo taken for your driver's license or ID card
When you apply for a driver’s license, identification card or instruction permit, you will need to take a photo for your card. You will need a new photo each time you apply if you have an Enhanced card or if you have an identity theft indicator on your record.
Your license, ID or permit must have a clear, full-face image. You must face the camera with a neutral expression and eyes open.
If the photo does not meet our standards, your card may be delayed, and you may be asked to come back in and take a new photo.
Examples of acceptable photos
Head coverings
Religious headwear
You may wear a head covering for religious purposes if it does not cover your face. We will ask you to sign a statement affirming the headwear is worn for religious purposes.
Non-religious headwear
You are allowed to wear a hat, scarf or other head covering for medical reasons.
Examples of unacceptable photos
Eyeglasses
You are not permitted to wear eyeglasses or sunglasses while taking your photo, even if you have a corrective lens restriction on your license.
You may request your photo be taken without a flash to accommodate light sensitivity. Contact us to find an exam station that can assist you.
None of these photos are acceptable:
Head position
You must face forward in your photo and look directly into the camera with your shoulders squared. Your head cannot be tipped back or forward.
None of these head positions are acceptable:
Head turned sideways.
Looking up.
Looking down.
Other issues with photo
None of these are acceptable:
Mouth open.
Eyes closed.
Hair in front of face and wearing glasses.
Do not wear a costume.
Photo accommodations
We can accept photos even if you are unable to open your eyes or have difficulty closing your mouth. Please let the person taking your photo know.
Mobility aids and devices are allowed in pictures.
If you need additional support to get a good photo, you could:
- Try to visit an office early when it may be less busy.
- Plan ahead. Bring along a favorite item if you like.
- Bring another person for support.
- Be prepared to take multiple photos. We are looking for the best photo we can get, not perfection.
